Angels – PETA sent a letter this morning to Casey Wasserman, chairman of the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, expressing its support for Olympic medalist Dotsie Bausch’s request for the Games to go vegan, and noting that serving animal-friendly food will be the best way to satisfy the Olympic Movement’s commitment to sustainability. Livestock is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation and droughts that contribute to catastrophic climate change and associated forest fires.

“If the Olympics want gold in sustainability, they will go vegan,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA is committed to helping the 2028 Games reduce their carbon footprint, support Los Angeles’s burgeoning vegan canteen, and protect the health of athletes, animals and the Earth with delicious plant foods.”

PETA, whose motto is in part that “the animals are not ours to eat” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…

This is followed by PETA’s letter to Wasserman.

    Casey Wasserman

    Chair

    2028 year

    Dear Mr. Wasserman:

I am writing on behalf of PETA and over 6.5 million of our members and supporters around the world, including thousands in Los Angeles, to echo Dotsie Bausch’s request to make the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics vegan. We applaud the Olympic Movement’s contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the overall commitment to sustainability so far, but without a doubt the most effective way to achieve sustainability is to go vegan.

The UN has already made it clear that a global transition to a vegan diet is necessary to combat the worst impacts of climate change, and that animal husbandry is “one of the two or three most significant contributors to our greatest environmental challenges, at every stage. local to global scale ”, including land degradation, air pollution, water pollution and loss of biodiversity.

The number of vegans has skyrocketed and continues to grow rapidly. Since the start of the pandemic, 23% of Americans have eaten more plant-based foods, and sales of vegan products in the US are up 90% during the pandemic. Hosting the Olympic Games as a vegan will help support local restaurants – in Los Angeles alone, at least 285 establishments are vegan or vegetarian.

A healthy vegan diet supports good health throughout life and provides protection against a variety of diseases, including some of the worst deaths in the country: heart disease, certain cancers and strokes. Bausch is a perfect example of someone who embraced a vegan lifestyle: she became the oldest athlete in her sport’s history to win an Olympic medal – a remarkable feat based on her healthy, plant-based diet.

As Bausch said, you are already far ahead. Going vegan is the next logical step, and it has never been easier. We will be happy to connect you with suppliers and help in any way we can. We look forward to hearing from you. Thanks for attention.

    Yours sincerely,

    Ingrid Newkirk

    The president
