Iowa City, Iowa – See Statement by Dr. Alka Chandna, Ph.D., PETA’s VP of Laboratory Investigations, regarding USDA documents showing the University of Iowa has been cited for serious violations of federal animal welfare laws:
The University of Iowa needs to move away from animal experimentation. Just released government documents obtained by PETA show that the school was named for serious violations of federal animal welfare laws for obscene neglect that resulted in the death of baby ferrets. In one case, a ferret’s leg got stuck in a cage. The animal had a bone fracture and was euthanized. In another case, a pregnant ferret was left in a cage not suitable for pregnant females. In this aviary, two of her kittens were found dead. Two more cats from this female were later found dead, even after she was transferred to an appropriate enclosure, although the cause of death has not been determined. Ferrets are known to be intelligent, sensitive, and responsive, but the same cannot be said for the University of Iowa lab staff.
PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not ours to experiment on” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human excellence. For more information on PETA news gathering and reporting, please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
