Worcester, Massachusetts. – See the following statement by Dr. Alka Chandna, Ph.D., PETA’s VP of Laboratory Investigations, regarding USDA documents showing that the University of Massachusetts Chan School of Medicine has been cited for serious violations of federal animal welfare laws:
Something rotten in the animal labs at the University of Massachusetts Chan School of Medicine. Just released government documents obtained by PETA show the university was accused of gross violations of federal animal welfare laws for indecent neglect that resulted in the death of hamsters. It seems that inadequate oversight of the hamster experiment led to an “unexpected outcome.” The experimenters euthanized some of the hamsters, but later that day it was discovered that three of the hamsters were left behind. Two died and the third was euthanized. Hamsters are known to be intelligent, sensitive, and meticulous in their attention to detail, but the same cannot be said for the experimenters of UMass.
PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not ours to experiment on” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human excellence. For more information on PETA news gathering and reporting, please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
