Myrtle Beach, South Carolina – PETA Will Smash Wakkati Zoo This Saturday: “Don’t Go To Roadside Zoos!” will fly over Myrtle Beach, and PETA’s “Tiger” mascot will spearhead a protest in memory of Leela – a tiger who eventually became bald and then recently died there after deteriorating in physical health – along the road leading to the infamous animal prison …

    When: Saturday, April 3, 12-14.

Where: A PETA banner will fly over downtown Myrtle Beach and the waterfront.

    When: Saturday, April 3, 11.00-14.00

Where: PETA supporters and other community members will protest along the road leading to Wakkati Zoo at the intersection of Highway 707 and Bay Road in Myrtle Beach.

“No one with the slightest bit of kindness can support a roadside zoo in which a tiger disappears in a sterile chamber,” says Michelle Sinnott, deputy director of the PETA Captive Law Enforcement Foundation. PETA is ready to help place three big cats in Wakkati Zoo cages in accredited reserves, where they will receive expert assistance and a place for wandering, which Leela has never had.

During 2020, Leela lost all of her fur except for a small spot on her face; she had a severely hunched back and an abnormal gait consistent with painful osteoarthritis; by December, she had lost significant weight and had poor muscle condition consistent with muscle atrophy. PETA discovered that she disappeared from Wakkati in February and demanded answers, and the roadside zoo finally admitted she was dead.

PETA, whose motto is in part that “the animals are not ours to be used for entertainment” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
