Report: Incompetence Kills Animals at OHSU

While there is already a plethora of evidence pointing to common violence, incompetence and neglect in Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) labs, PETA has discovered even more animal suffering in OHSU’s gruesome prisons.

Federal reports obtained by PETA reveal egregious and ongoing violations of federal animal welfare regulations and show that experimenters and OHSU staff, including staff at the Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC), are clearly unable to provide for the monkeys and other animals they contain. even the most basic defenses. It’s time to bring them to justice.

OHSU boasts that its laboratories “change science every day,” but federal reports show that the same people it praises in those laboratories have done the following:

    • We failed to notice that the monkey escaped during the transfer of two monkeys to another enclosure (the young monkey was trapped between the wall and a row of cages and died).
    • Unable to notice that two monkeys were locked in a cage designed for a high-temperature washing machine, where they were exposed to 180-degree temperatures and scalded to death.
    • Failed brain surgery by incorrectly cutting the monkey’s skull (the monkey was deprived of veterinary care for several days and developed a brain infection. In 2020, another monkey suffered the same fate).
    • Twelve mice were killed for failing to properly seat the cage, resulting in a water valve leak that flooded the cage and drowned each mouse inside it.
    • Allowed four mice to die of dehydration after not realizing they had no access to water.
    • Monkeys denied painkillers and antibiotics
    • Failed to administer a second dose of pain medication while collecting cerebrospinal fluid in 12 monkeys

The documents show that OHSU cannot even keep its own experimenters locked up.

Several experimenters deviated from protocols previously approved by a university committee tasked with enforcing minimum animal welfare standards used in experiments that cause pain and almost always end in animal death. One experimenter suspended two protocols after repeated repeated incidents of non-compliance. They were later reinstated at work.

Records show that the ferret was euthanized after experimental brain surgery failed, causing “unexpected anatomical complications” that were not further identified. The same experimenter used unapproved methods and inappropriate materials for euthanasia, stored sterile supplies in non-sterile containers, failed to document laboratory staff training, and failed to ensure occupational health requirements. The experimenter also did not keep veterinary records and did not notify veterinary staff according to protocol when animals needed veterinary care.

There is no reason for even one of these painful incidents to occur, many of which were fatal, except for the culture in OHSU laboratories, which have received more than $ 1.5 billion in taxpayer money since 2018 from the National Institutions. health care is evidently causing a heartless disregard for both animals and regulations.

OHSU must take this matter seriously and introduce a zero-tolerance policy for experimenters and their staff who do not adhere to animal welfare regulations or veterinary staff directives, and a zero-tolerance policy for staff who do not provide food to animals. , water or suitable shelter.

    Take action for the animals

We urge OHSU to close ONPRC immediately!
