Ellijay, Georgia – armed with a terrifying USDA report documenting that a federal inspector saw a worker at Pilgrim’s Pride slaughterhouse in Ellijay “force” a live chicken into an obstacle causing the bird to fall and “choke” before dying, This morning PETA wrote to B. Alison Soseby, District Attorney for the Appalachian Judicial District, asking him to review the matter and, if necessary, charge the worker with animal cruelty.

“If someone throws a puppy into an obstacle with such force that it suffocates and dies, the culprit will be charged with abuse,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphne Nakhminovic. PETA is calling for a criminal investigation and calling on everyone concerned about this chicken’s excruciating death to help prevent animals from being sent to slaughterhouses in the first place by going vegan.

A federal report, which PETA just received at the request of the Freedom of Information Act, found 11 more violations at other Pilgrim’s Pride slaughterhouses across the country, including in Canton, where an agent found a live chicken in a barrel of dead birds.

PETA, whose motto is in part that “the animals are not ours to eat” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…

This is followed by a letter from PETA Sosebi.

    April 14, 2021

    The Honorable B. Alison Soseby

    District attorney

    Appalachian Judicial District

    Dear Ms. Sosebi:

I am requesting your office (and local law enforcement, if you deem appropriate) to investigate and bring appropriate criminal charges against the Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation employee responsible for the chicken’s fatal strike on the barrier on April 9, 2020. at the company’s slaughterhouse located at 125 Industrial Blvd. to Ellijay. The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has documented the incident in the attached report, which PETA has just received on request from open sources.

According to the report, a federal veterinarian saw a worker “forcefully” throw a “small live bird” into an obstacle behind him, causing the fence to vibrate. The federal agent heard a “thud” as the bird hit the surface, then saw the bird fall onto the grate, flapped its wings, and gasped for air before dying. An FSIS spokesperson notes that he or she has “discussed the issue of employees forcibly throwing chickens with the management of Pilgrim’s Pride many times.

Such conduct may violate Georgia Code § 16-12-4 (d) (1). FSIS’s actions demonstrate that this egregious atrocity is not an agricultural or food practice permitted by federal or state law, which is otherwise not subject to legal action. It is important to note that FSIS action does not invalidate state criminal liability for slaughterhouse workers who commit acts of cruelty to animals.

Please let me know if I can help you. Thank you for your attention and for the hard work you are doing.

    Sincerely,

    Daniel Paden

    Vice President of Evidence Analysis

    Abuse Investigation Department
