A dozen pigs were killed, and another 12 were left so crippled and bloody that they had to be spared their suffering on the spot. The pigs were screaming. “It’s probably… a broken pig… lying there,” one of the officers remarked at the crash site of a truck heading to the Smithfield Foods slaughterhouse in Virginia on May 24, driven by Zachary Taylor Edwards. This is the suffering for which the drivers working for Smithfield Foods have been repeatedly held responsible. But today, after a hearing in Suffolk District Court, Edwards told PETA that he quit work– and considers never carry live animals again…

On body camera footage obtained by PETA, police concluded that Edwards was “asleep” or “walking too fast.” Post-crash footage shows a Smithfield worker ordering others to fire a “hot shot” to shock the surviving pigs and put them on a replacement truck to continue their agonizing journey to the slaughterhouse.

The crash exacerbated the stress and horror of the animals that had already been bred, bred and raised in nightmarish conditions. Once at the slaughterhouse, the workers probably hung the surviving pigs upside down and slit their throats. Edwards – a husband and father who described the accident as “terrible” – set an example for other truck drivers by quitting his job. By slowing down the transportation of live animals on a permanent basis, he set the stage for others to follow suit.

The video above also shows how 18 trucks carrying live pigs to the same Smithfield slaughterhouse crashed, including those that were involved in four crashes in 2020 alone. In response to a PETA inquiry, the Virginia Department of Transportation is currently investigating why nine of them crashed on one. Suffolk Mansion, Virginia, St.

Will Edwards promise never to carry live animals again? each sake?

Time will show. For yourself, your family, and animals, we hope Edwards makes the right decision.
