Hopewell, Virginia. “With temperatures expected to drop below freezing this week, PETA is bringing straw bedding to Dollar Tree’s Hopewell parking lot, where residents can pick up one bag of straw per dog on Wednesday. The Giveaway will help Virginians comply with state law, which, in addition to not allowing dogs to be chained outside at temperatures of 32 degrees or below– requires all dogs kept outdoors to be provided with insulating straw or other bedding and dog kennels to have a windscreen to protect the animals from the cold.

“Being left outside in the freezing cold causes terrible suffering and can even be a death sentence for a dog,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphne Nachminovich. “While PETA encourages everyone to keep dogs indoors with the rest of the family, we offer a little help that makes a huge difference in the life of dogs.”
Animals left outside in the cold can suffer from frostbite and hypothermia, become dehydrated when water sources are covered with ice, and even die. When kept on a leash, dogs often become entangled and die because they cannot reach food, water, or shelter. All dogs kept in isolation in the open air – chained or in paddocks – are denied the companionship that is so important to these very social pack animals.
