Atlanta – The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is investigating Emory University and its affiliated Yerkes National Primate Research Center into alleged abuse of monkeys after PETA filed a complaint with the agency over federal animal welfare violations.
According to federal reports received by PETA at the request of the Freedom of Information Act, Emory University experimenters were unable to provide adequate veterinary care for a rhesus monkey that had a surgical sponge inside it for a long time. four months after cesarean section and failed to properly sterilize the kidney biopsy needle between uses on two monkeys, posing a risk of pathogen transmission.
