China launched the first of its kind last week Community Hero Network. This ranger-led initiative is dedicated to dramatically reducing Human-Elephant Conflict (HEC) in Jinghong area in Yunnan, China.

In cooperation with the Jinghong government, International Fund for the Protection of Animals (IFAW) will maintain the equipment and materials needed to monitor the movement of elephants and provide training for more than 50 local rangers on methods of mitigating conflicts between people and elephants. The rangers will then conduct one-to-one and in-depth human and elephant safety training for residents of all seven Jinghong counties.
“Community Hero is one of the most important initiatives in our collaboration with government partner Jinghong,” said Dafan CAO, project leader Asian Elephant Protection (AEP) who has nearly 20 years of HEC mitigation experience. “Rangers who work and live in close contact with local communities can provide local residents with timely and necessary support. We hope that they will not only improve the safety of humans and elephants, but also become ambassadors for the conservation of elephants and their habitats, on which we also depend. ”
