The weekend was extremely busy to apprehend poaching suspects in Kruger National Park (KNP), South African National Parks (SANParks) released information on two incidents that resulted in the arrest of numerous potential poachers and the death of one poacher from a breeding herd of elephants.

“It was a successful weekend in the fight to keep our rhinos alive in the park. We are very pleased that our anti-poaching teams were able to arrest suspects before any animal was killed, ”said Gareth Coleman, KNP CEO. statement. “These actions are building the morale of our anti-poaching and conservation teams.”

On Saturday, SUNPark Rangers, supported by Airwing, as well as K9 units, apprehended one suspected poacher and seized poaching equipment, including a rifle and an ax. The second suspect was trampled by a herd of elephants. The third, who reportedly suffered an eye injury, managed to escape.

On Sunday, following the discovery of another intrusion during routine patrols, the rangers tracked the trail until they came into contact with a group of three suspected poaching, who were subsequently arrested in the Pretoriuskop section of the park. A large-caliber hunting rifle, poaching equipment and ammunition were also found.

“We hope the arrests will serve as a convincing signal to poachers that we are determined to stop them on their way to the park. SANParks is committed to working more with law enforcement and communities outside the park to intensify efforts to combat crime syndicates leading these crimes.

“Only through discipline, teamwork and perseverance will we be able to stop the wave of rhino poaching in KNP.

“Campaigning against poaching is the responsibility of all of us; it threatens the lives of many people, destroys families and requires much-needed crime-fighting resources that could otherwise be used for job creation and development, ”concluded Coleman.
